The priorities of electric vehicle charging infrastructure developers and investors
After a delayed start, mainly due to component shortages, the symbolic milestone of 100,000 public electric charging points was reached in mid-2023. The deployment rate at the end of the year was close to +50% over the previous 12 months, enabling the government's objective to be achieved. The next objective is now set at 400,000 public charging points by 2030.
In 2024, we will pay particular attention to the following topics:
The evolution of the utilization rate of public charging points in competition with private charging (at home and at work).
The development of "infrastructure" business models to control traffic risk.
The capacity of developers to select sites with the best potential utilization rates based on their characteristics.
The emergence of a fleet of electric utility vehicles and heavy-duty trucks, and the associated need for charging.
The competition between batteries and hydrogen for the decarbonization of utility vehicle and heavy-duty truck fleets.
The tariff strategies of different actors, particularly in a context where a "tariff maze" is beginning to be criticized.
The evolution of the technical availability of charging stations, which is crucial both for the user experience and for asset profitability.
The prospects for consolidation among charging operators.
The growth of electric vehicle penetration, as purchase incentives decrease or become more stringent.
